Where it fits

Villas are one of the largest groups on Hangzhou's list. Most were built between the 1910s and the 1940s, when officials, bankers, doctors and merchants from Shanghai and Hangzhou built houses on the roads and hillsides around West Lake and in the city's newer streets. Typical features are two or three storeys of brick, or brick and timber, sloping tiled roofs and a mix of Chinese and Western details. All the villas on the list.

It belongs to the third batch, announced on 6 March 2007: 70 buildings, including stone-gate lanes east of West Lake, Republican-era shops, and the canal-side houses and transfer firms of Xixing and Changhe.

What the listing protects

A listed building may not be altered, moved or demolished without approval. Under the regulations in force since 1 October 2013, each listed building has a protection plan and a sign put up by the city, and falls into one of three protection categories, from keeping its main exterior features to keeping its exterior, plan, structure and details.

Its owner, or for a state-owned building its user, is responsible for upkeep and repairs, and a repair plan must be approved first. The listing does not open a building to the public: most listed buildings are still homes, offices, schools or shops.
