About this site
About Hangzhou Memory
Hangzhou Memory is an independent, English-language guide to the declared historic buildings of Hangzhou, written for travellers, students of architecture and anyone curious about the city beyond West Lake's postcard views.
Where the facts come from
- The official lists of declared historic buildings published by the Hangzhou municipal government in five batches (2004–2010).
- English Wikipedia's lists of declared historic buildings in Hangzhou, whose descriptions we adapt under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence and credit on each page.
- Archived copies of the former Chinese heritage portal on this domain, used only for facts such as names and dates.
- Chinese Wikipedia's article on Hangzhou's historic buildings (杭州市历史建筑), for Chinese names, periods and addresses, also under CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Photographs from Wikimedia Commons only, under the licence each file carries, with the photographer credited and linked. Some were uploaded by accounts of the former portal ("hangzhoumemory", "Laohangzhou"); crediting them as the licence requires does not connect Hangzhou Memory with that portal.
Where sources disagree we give the range or leave the detail out, and every page shows when it was last updated.
Independence and advertising
Hangzhou Memory is not a government website and has no connection with Hangzhou's planning, heritage or real estate authorities. The site is paid for by display advertising, which is always labelled.
The history of this domain
From about 2011 to 2017 hangzhoumemory.org hosted a Chinese-language portal about Hangzhou's heritage, with a page for each declared historic building. The domain later lapsed and was briefly used by unrelated sites. Hangzhou Memory is a new project with no connection to any earlier operator.
Hangzhou Memory is an independent reference site. It is not affiliated with the Hangzhou municipal government, its heritage or real estate bureaus, or any previous operator of this domain.
