The city's description, as summarised on English Wikipedia: Constructed between 1911 and 1949, it is a three-story villa with slope-roof and in plain-brick style.

Heng Lu was built in 1935 by the physician Zhang Xingyi at 202 Nanshan Road. The main house is a Western-style building of three storeys including the attic, in blue brick, with about 20 rooms, behind a boundary wall of large rocks; the calligrapher Yu Shaosong wrote the inscription over the gate.

After 1949 it became a multi-family residence. When the southern shore of West Lake was redeveloped in 2002 the plot was auctioned, and the main building was taken down and rebuilt; it now houses the Heng Lu Art Museum.

Where it fits

Villas are one of the largest groups on Hangzhou's list. Most were built between the 1910s and the 1940s, when officials, bankers, doctors and merchants from Shanghai and Hangzhou built houses on the roads and hillsides around West Lake and in the city's newer streets. Typical features are two or three storeys of brick, or brick and timber, sloping tiled roofs and a mix of Chinese and Western details. All the villas on the list.

It belongs to the first batch, announced on 24 May 2004: 75 buildings, from Republican-era villas around West Lake to lane houses, temples and churches in the old city.

What the listing protects

A listed building may not be altered, moved or demolished without approval. Under the regulations in force since 1 October 2013, each listed building has a protection plan and a sign put up by the city, and falls into one of three protection categories, from keeping its main exterior features to keeping its exterior, plan, structure and details.

Its owner, or for a state-owned building its user, is responsible for upkeep and repairs, and a repair plan must be approved first. The listing does not open a building to the public: most listed buildings are still homes, offices, schools or shops.
