Hangzhou historic shops and factories account for 30 buildings on the city's historic buildings list: old-established shops of the Qing and Republican eras, the transfer firms of Xixing on the canal, and factories and warehouses built between the 1950s and the 1980s.

## In brief

Hangzhou's 2013 regulations name workshops, shops, factories and warehouses that represent the history of industry as one of the grounds for listing a building. The list includes old-established shops of the Qing and Republican eras around Zhongshan Road and Hefang Street, the transfer firms of Xixing on the canal, and factories and warehouses built between the 1950s and the 1980s.

## The transfer firms of Xixing

At Xixing, at the western end of the East Zhejiang Canal, firms called *guotanghang* moved goods and travellers between the canal and the Qiantang River from the Ming dynasty on.
